Unit 5 is a direct off-shoot of the ATL Jazz Syndicate technique building sessions held in Acworth, GA. Unit 5 has been growing and developing as a jazz performance group with a strong 5 piece configuration of piano, guitar, sax, drums and bass. The group is as diverse as the music they play:
Dave has been playing sax for over 20 years, in dives, Atlanta jams, and bands including The Edukaterz, Sana’s Blues Band, Rockaholics, Sonic Groove, and others. Dave started out singing in church and high school choirs in Philly. In college, he taught himself to play guitar, badly, to the dismay of many roommates. In the ’80’s and ’90’s he played in several electric blues bands. Upon turning 41 he decided to learn saxophone, and is still trying to learn it.
Lew has been playing the guitar for about 50 years in a variety of settings. Lew studied at the University of Miami and continued his music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston. While playing mostly jazz and blues, Lew has clung tenaciously to his day job.
Mike grew up in northern Wisconsin where he was part of a performing rock and roll group throughout high school and college. While attending college he also performed with the symphonic band and brass choir. After a 35 year sabbatical to pursue a business career, Mike was bitten by the Jazz bug and began studying jazz piano and is now excited to be returning to performing live music. His destiny was to be surrounded by beautiful women, his wife Mary Lou and his four daughters..
Bob has been a regular on the Atlanta music scene since 2000. Originally from Upstate New York (Born in Binghamton NY) Bob has been playing with the Glory Hounds and The Fans Of Vinyl Bands in and around the Atlanta area, club work, corporate events and weddings are all parts to his resume. His love of jazz has brought him to this group of musicians. He resides in Woodstock,GA with his wife, Kimberly, and is a father of four.
Ed started playing bass at the age of 8, began playing professionally when he was 12, and has been immersed in music his entire life. He attended The Juilliard School in NYC starting at the age of 14 and continued through his high school years, receiving certification at 18. After a long career as a journeyman musician, Ed relocated to the greater Atlanta area, living in Acworth with his wife, Sheila, and two crazy dogs. Ed started the Atlanta Jazz Syndicate in 2016, working with musicians of varying backgrounds … the Unit 5 is an outgrowth of the ATL Jazz Syndicate.
